Stevenson； Robert Louis （Balfour） 斯蒂文森 （1850…1894）
英国作家。生于苏格兰爱丁堡，毕业于爱丁堡大学。1875年当过律师，后转向为期刊写作并记见闻、散文和短篇小说。

AT SIXES AND SEVENS
一看到这个短语，聪明的读者可能立刻联就想到汉语中类似的表达如『乱七八糟』、『七上八下』、『七零八落』等等，这些词语大多都是杂乱无章乱糟糟之意。说来人类思维还真有相通的成份，作为思维载体的语言就表现出在表达上的相似性，英语中以数字组成的词语也有相似的含意。at six and sevens 的英文释义为：not in order； in confusion； in a mess，和汉语中的『七零八落 』、『乱七八糟』如出一辄。例如：

AX TO GRIND
这个短语的由来与形成同美国的大政治家、大发明家富兰克林少年时代的一段趣事有关，读来饶有趣味。
富兰克林在自己的自传中记录了这样一件事：富兰克林在其少年时代经常在自家农场上劳动。有一天一位陌生男子来到他的面前，一边看富兰克林转动砂轮，一边不住地夸奖他。就在这时，这个男子将自己的斧子放到砂轮上，同时不住口地夸奖富兰克林。小富兰克林被他的赞扬搞得飘飘然，于是更加飞快地转动砂轮。斧子终于磨好了，那位男子却未加任何表示地离去了，小富兰克林的双手却被磨出了许多血泡。这时，他才明白自己上了那位男子的当。
由这段故事而产生的 ax to grind 这个短语被人们用来表示这样的意义：something to gain for oneself or a selfish reason，中文大抵可以翻译为『为了达到个人目的』、『居心叵侧』、『用甜言蜜语欺骗人』等。例如：
Whenever he flatters your generosity； he will certainly have an ax to grind。
